Festivals

Festivals are a fun experience for all participating students, giving them the opportunity to dance on stage for their parents, friends and family. As students of Kirkwood we ask that they continue the standard of professionalism that has been set for decades and has been the trademark of the Kirkwood studio. Inappropriate behaviour and language will not be tolerated towards any festival members, students and schools from other communities dancing in the festival.  Festival is a competition but at Kirkwood we encourage performance quality, fun and the growth of every dancer through the process of preparing and performing on stage.

The Upper Island Musical Festival (Nanaimo) dance section is a 2 week dance extravaganza where dance schools from all over Vancouver Island, with over 900 entries, come to perform and compete in Nanaimo at the Beban Park Stage. Some classes from Kirkwood will work on their dances starting in Fall in preparation for the Festival in the Spring.

There are a few festivals out of town that students may wish to participate in and so as to perform their solos, duets, etc. more than once.  In general Kirkwood does not send groups to these Festivals, although CoreDance is a local Festival held at the Port Theatre and if classes are interested, is a great opportunity that a group dance could have.

Festival entry procedure and important dates are outlined below for the Upper Island Musical Festival, the North Island Performing Arts Festival, Victoria Danceworks, Shine Festival and CoreDance.  Please be aware that if there are not enough participants in an out-of-town Festival it is the individual’s responsibility to enter before the deadline.

1.  Upper Island Musical Festival

Any dancers in Primary and up will be performing groups in the Upper Island Musical Festival held at Beban Park between March 27th and April 1oth. If there is a reason your dancers may not be in attendance leading up to and during this time, please let us know asap. Even now, we are in the midst of choreography and having dancers missing makes has big impact on the teachers and the rest of the dancers in the group. Regular attendance in classes is important and and a timely email regarding classes being missed is always appreciated.

Solo/Duet UIMF entries need to be submitted to Leah by the deadlines emailed out in the fall. Group Festival entries for the Upper Island Festival are submitted by teachers so no further steps need to be taken by those who have dancers not electing to do additional solo/duet choreography.  Paper format (available in the studio lobby) to be submitted to our studio representative (Leah Kos) for computer registration for solos, duets, etc. Please do not register your dancer online.

Registration Deadlines

Please note that Festival registration fees for groups are collected by Kirkwood in advance via the costume fee.

Modern and Contemporary are 2 separate categories starting in 2013.

Lyrics are NOT allowed in ballet categories in 2014.

NO ENTRIES AT THIS TIME.  DEADLINE WILL BE JANUARY 2014.

>> Due to the number of entries submitted through the studio for Festival, it would be appreciated if entries were submitted EARLIER rather than later.

2.  Victoria Danceworks

Victoria DanceWorks is a competition for dancers age 10 and over (as of January 1, 2014). For each entry, dancers attend a master class, which they are assessed in, plus perform two solos in the same discipline (e.g. 1 x classical ballet, 1 x demi-character). For information on the festival itself, please visit their website at www.victoriadanceworks.ca or check out their syllabus.

All entries are entered through Kirkwood. You will not need to contact Victoria DanceWorks personally to register (despite this being stated / offered on the website), nor will you need an access code. If you have any questions or would like more information about the Victoria DanceWorks competition, please email festival@kirkwoodacademy.com. We'd be more than happy to answer any questions you have.

Musical Theatre

As well as regular classes, Kirkwood students have the opportunity to be involved in full length Musical Theatre productions.  The productions give the students another chance to perform and showcase their talents, dance with dancers of a diversity of ages, as well as to learn how a professional company works.   Annually, there is a Musical Theatre production that is performed in the theatre at the Vancouver Island University in Spring.  This year, however, we will be performing Seussical at the end of November at the Port Theatre!

Exams

Ballet Exams

Students learn the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) syllabus. We find this the ideal tool in teaching our students artistry, musicality, and ballet technique. When students are ready, they may take the exam which entails performing their set class work in front of a guest examiner accompanied by a pianist. Exams, from Pre-Primary level to Grade 8, are held twice a year at our studio in December and April/May.

These exams are an extra cost outside of regular class payments.  You will receive a notice from Carolé when it is time for your child to take the exam according to their grade.  Also the children will have extra Pianist rehearsals prior to the exam in order for them to be comfortable with the live music. These extra practices will be posted on the Main Board.

The RAD in Toronto sets the dates and times of the exams and these times may be during school hours. These dates and times will be posted on the Main Board a few weeks prior to the exam dates. Please have your child at Kirkwood 45 minutes prior to the exam time with the exam uniform (please see Dance Attire for correct uniform) to ensure the student has time to warm up, practice and have their hair done. Dancers must each bring their own hair accessories (gel, hairspray, bobby pins and thick pins, elastics & hair nets in hair colour) and a teacher will be there to style the bun. A reminder there is NO jewelry allowed and make up is not required.

Exam results usually take between 4-6 weeks depending on the time of year and will placed in your file folders once the results have arrived.

Tap Exams

Students generally start to learn the Imperial Society of Dance (ISTD) syllabus in Grade 5. Exams will be held some time in either the Fall or the Spring.

Modern Exams

2012 was the first year Kirkwood students participated in ISTD Modern exams.  Congratulations to Chantelle Norris and all of the students who diligently worked to prepare for their modern exams

Syllabus

Syllabus is the set work the students will dance in their upcoming exams.  There are 2 weeks of syllabus offered and we will do our best to ensure that dancers can attend either week.  Over the week students will learn the majority of their exam criteria and will continue to develop their technique and artistry.  Syllabus is recommended for all students wishing to pursue the exam in the upcoming season.

Syllabus Weeks Dates Options:

Week 1:  August 12th-16th, 2013

OR

Week 2:  August 19th-23rd, 2013

OR

If a dancer is available for neither week, we will arrange private or small group lessons.  Please email info@kirkwoodacademy.com as soon as you know your dancer will be away.

Photo Days

Group photos

After the year end performance is over we will have photo days for group and solo dances.  Suzanne Oates will be taking the pictures from June 4th-6th. This is an opportunity for all to have a keepsake of their dances over the dance season. We encourage all those in the groups especially to come to the photos as it nice to have an entire ensemble in the photo. Individual photos will also be taken and it is the responsibility of the solo or duet artist to sign themselves up for a time.

On Photo Day, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your assigned time to make sure the child is ready in their costume, minimal makeup (no jewelry please), correct footwear and props if applicable. For the younger groups it is helpful if 1 or 2 parents help in the photo room (Studio C) to help keep the students organized.  Photos will be handed out by Syllabus.

Photo day at the Beach

Our 3rd annual photo day will be held in Sept 8th 2013. Dancers will also have the opportunity to dance for Paws for a cause on this day.
